The Geographical Association (GA) is a charity in England. It has been a vibrant community of people interested in professional practice in geography teaching for over a century. Its mission is to increase geographical knowledge through education. To support high-quality geography teaching, to enable geography teachers to share ideas and learn from each other, and to support the professional needs of teachers.
The Geographical Society is a charitable organisation founded in 1893 and incorporated as a private company limited by guarantee in 2010. The Geographical Society’s articles and bylaws set out its charitable purposes and the activities it is permitted to undertake. The Geographical Society also operates under its own policies on equal opportunities and sustainability.
In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, the Geographical Society is a source of authoritative advice and guidance on all matters relating to geography education. The Geographical Society has thousands of personal and institutional memberships in over 60 countries. This includes primary and secondary teachers, teacher trainees, teacher educators, academics, university geographers, college students, library and museum patrons.
The Geographical Society seeks to spread the culture of teaching geography to every individual. It aims to develop society, through developing its individuals and making them vibrant with the necessary diverse knowledge, through several objectives:
The Geographical Society aims to create a community of geography teachers that is more vibrant than it is today, larger, more diverse and better connected than ever before. We want the work of the General Society and the geography teaching community to be more inclusive and sustainable and to make a clear difference to the place of geography in education and society, as well as nurturing professional knowledge and inspiring young people through geography.
