In 2014, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated the headquarters of the World Free Zones Organization in Dubai, licensed by Geneva, Switzerland, as a global non-profit organization representing the interests of free zones around the world.
The concept of free zones in its various forms has gained great popularity over the past decades, with the number of free zones in the world reaching about 2260, employing about 70 million people worldwide.
